Redo Work
Let's face it... third grade is not what it used to be! The things students are learning today are SO much more advanced than what we ever did in third grade a few years back, and sometimes the work can be pretty tough! Most students are able to keep up with new concepts pretty easily, but from time to time they may find particular skills to be a bit more challenging than they expected. If your child ever receives a score below 70% on an assignment, I will write "Please fix and turn in." on the top of his/her paper. Ultimately, I would just like them to go over the assignment with you or with me to make sure they understand the concept... that's our main goal. But to provide a little additional incentive to do this, students who redo the assignment and turn it back in to me are able to earn back some of the points they missed originally. I will average together your child's original grade with the new grade, and the average becomes their final "Redo Grade".
Report Cards
Students will receive a report card at the end of each quarter. The report card will contain grades for all subjects and social skills, as well as scores for Essential Objectives. For the first and third quarters, I will share the report card at a Parent-Teacher-Student Conference. For the second and fourth quarters, the report card will be sent home with the student or mailed to you. Parents and students can also access grades on Power School at any time.
Recess
Our third grade schedule allows for two recesses per day. The first recess (morning break) is at 10:50, and the second recess is immediately after lunch. (12:40) Please make sure your child dresses appropriately for the weather outside each day. As long as it is not raining, snowing, or below 20 degrees, we will be going outside. Please also note that with our first break occurring in the morning, temps can still be very chilly compared to the forecasted highs that will occur much later in the day.
In winter, if there is snow on the ground, students may play in the snow as long as they are wearing FULL snow gear. This includes a coat and snow pants (or snowsuit), snow boots, and waterproof gloves. You might want to tuck an extra pair of socks and pants in your child's backpack as our snow bunnies often come in to find that the wetness has soaked through their snow gear, and sitting in wet, cold clothes in class is definitely no fun!
Please note: I am a firm believer that EVERY child needs an opportunity to get out and run around at recess. Because of that, I will never take away a child's lunch recess due to behavior or overdue work. That time is theirs. However, students who receive 3 or more check marks on their behavior card during a day or have overdue work will find themselves missing out on their morning break. That one has to be earned..
