X-tra Practice
Looking for ways to help your child succeed in third grade? Take note of concepts that we are studying in class and give your child extra opportunities to practice those skills at home! Whether it's reading books, checking out fun websites on the internet, playing spelling games together, or going on a family field trip, there are lots of ways to engage your child in learning and help them see that learning is something that happens everywhere around them... and not just in school.

Ideas....
- Read with your child on a regular basis. Take turns reading pages so they get a chance to hear good fluency and expression from you, then get a chance to practice on their own.
- Take a field trip to your local library and look for books related to our current social studies or science unit.
- Check out links on our class website that relate to what we are currently studying in class and explore those together.
- During our plant and/or animal units in science, sneak in a weekend trip to the zoo or Fontenelle Forest. :Look for examples of predator/prey, herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores, camouflage and mimicry, etc.
- During our "Native American" unit in social studies, visit the Wildlife Safari to see a herd of buffalo or visit the Durham Museum to see Native American artifacts.
- During our "Nutrition" unit in Health, take a field trip to the grocery store and look for foods from each of the food groups. Read labels / ingredient lists to see what's healthy and what's not! Then go home and cook a healthy, balanced meal together.
- Practice those basic math facts every day!!!! Use links from our class website, do speed drills, quiz 'em in the car, write them in sand or shaving cream.... whatever you can do to fit them in and make it fun!
